Home-Based Carpet Installs 178 sy’s of Bliss Carpet by Beaulieu in Cincinnati, Ohio

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

We just finished a beautiful installation of wall to wall carpet for a family of 5 in the Sharonville area of Cincinnati, Ohio. The 3 children are 6-8-11 and mom and dad work full time. The husband is a engineer and they are tough too please. They also have a very friendly large dog.  When we went to the home we wanted to show products that would withstand the foor traffic of 2 adults and 3 kids.  All the bedrooms were located on the second floor meaning heavy traffic on the steps and down the hallways. And with Buffy the dog the household can rest assured that any spots he makes will come right up.
We were also concerned about the 3 girls and the makeup that goes along with growing up into the teenager years. You know….cosmetics, liquid eyeliner and even lipstick down the road. We also care about the 4 legged friends of our customers and the ease of cleanup of accidents that all pets have.
SO WHAT CARPET DID WE TAKE INTO THE HOME ?

Bliss

I’am so proud of the job the crew did. Beautiful seams with seam tape that will endure future steam cleaning and not unravel at the seams. Most carpet installers use the cheapest seam tape they can find and use the rest of the money in their pocket for lunch and gas. Not at Home-Based Carpet.  I want a happy customer for life. There is a difference between tape that runs $ 4.00 p/roll and tape we use that is $ 8.00 p/roll. Most carpet manufacturies require your new carpet to be steam cleaned every 18-24 months by a member of the Carpet & Rug Cleaning Institute.  Cheap seam tape won’t take the heat for more thatn 2 cleaning. The powerstretch will last for years to come with no wrinkle problems. You know that certain Bliss styles even come with a 10 year no wrinkle warranty. The brown/goldish frieze with flecks of other colors just looked stunning. I know without a doubt that this home will love their new wall to wall carpeting.  As a matter of fact the jobs we sell I phone back  at least once a year to make sure things are good. I would not be embarassed to go back into a customers home in 5 years and I know I would be still proud of the installation and wear of the carpet.

Is Wall to Wall Carpeting Good or Bad For Allergies ? What Do I Do For Flooring ?

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

This a question that lots of potential buyers for wall to wall carpeting who live near the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio area quite often asked and seek advice on for a solution. My experience tells me that there should be as much concern for the old carpet that has to be taken up and disposed of, before new flooring can even be installaed. Dust mites are found in carpet, bedding, and even stuffed toy animals. When we take up old carpeting we always advise the customer to open windows and allow for good ventilation during the disposal. We cut the old carpet into three foot sections and roll up and tie the old and do the same with the old carpet padding and put out for the local trash. Its during this time that we make sure that if a member of the household has allergy problems they should not be around for the take up of the old carpet. After the old carpet is taken up we sweep up the dust, etc and begin preping the floor for the new flooring application.
If you are concerned about the new flooring product I would advise you to go with a low pile carpet if you decide to use carpeting. A berber that is tightly looped or even a flat industrial carpet is very good. Beaulieu of America makes very good carpet that even contains zinc and chrome to resist the mold and mildew. They make a collection of carpets under the Bliss label that are very home healthy carpet choices. They also make beautiful plush carpet and level loops and berbers. The thicker the pile of course the more the carpet would collect dust and cause allergic reactions. Of course a hard surface floor would be a better choice. Hardwood, ceramic and some vinyl luxury tiles are very attractive in residential setting. I have found however, that in the Cincinnati area with the cold climate 4-6 months a year those hard surface floors get really cold and stay cold underfoot. You can have area rugs made up to scatter over the hard surface flooring. There have been many times over the last 37 years that customers have installed hardsurface floors for allergy relief problems and have come back to put area rugs over the hard surface flooring. One of the things we do at Home-Based Carpet is to pre-cut the carpet at the warehouse and allow the rolls to lay out flat a few days prior to the wall to wall installation. We have even pre-vacuumed some installations prior to coming to the customers home. Again you will want to have windows open and allow for flow-thru air ventilation.
I have found that quite often it is the glue and other products in the making of the carpet that can cause allergy problems as much as the carpet fiber itself. Several years ago we did a job in ther Finneytown area of Cincinnati that was for a family that had 2 small children that had severe allergy problems. The Mrs. took the children and went to moms house for the week and things just went great. No problems when they back home either.
I would advise that you talk to your doctor and get their advice on your particular allergy problems before purchasing.
We will be happy to assist you with solutions to your flooring needs. We care about the air quality in your home and will do everything we can to make your buying desision a great experience.

Can You Get A Deal At The Big Box Stores On Carpeting In Cincinnati ?

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Recently I had the opportunity to estimate three bedrooms in Cincinnati. The customer had picked out a beautiful nylon Stainresistant frieze carpet with Stainresistant carpet padding and the labor was suppose to be $ 25.00. Have you heard the old saying ‘ If It Sounds To Good To Be True It Usually Isn’t .’ In this case you better check the fine print. You really don’t believe that two carpet installers are going to come to your home, work hard all day and move your furniture back and forth and make only $ 25. I DON’T THINK SO !

I visted the home center and examined the carpet the customer picked out for her childrens bedrooms. The carpet was priced at $ 3.99 sf, the padding was $ .78 sf and the installation was $ 25.00. Sounds like a great deal for a carpet doesn’t it ? I don’t think so. They have simply built the real labor into the carpet and pad. If you check out the same exact carpet at a family owned flooring store I believe that 9 out of 10 times you will get a much better price and a better installation. Take up is extra, furniture is extra, haul off is extra. Any metals or turning and tacking of the carpet is extra. The home center I checked wanted over $ 8 for each regular step. And to boot you have to pay the full amount of the order up front.

Make sure you compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. You will discover that dealing with a independent store you will get a better deal and a better installation.

Commercial Flooring Options – Carpet To Vinyl Solutions

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Commercial flooring differs greatly from the flooring used in a home or apartment. Schools, malls, supermarkets, offices, and warehouses need a different type of flooring due to the extremely high foot traffic these facilities experience on a day to day basis.  Therefore, commercial flooring options need to be very strong and durable to be able to withstand the number of people walking across them all the time.  Commercial flooring also needs to be maintained at a higher rate than flooring in private facilities as well, since the flooring will wear out much faster.
However, which flooring options make the best solutions?  So-called “resilient flooring” is one of the popular commercial flooring options out there. It encompasses several different types of flooring materials, such as linoleum, vinyl composition tile (also known as VCT), rubber tile, and sheet vinyl.  Resilient flooring is quite popular in high traffic areas such as schools and hospitals.
Its popularity is derived largely from its cost-effectiveness:  It’s a cheap, economical type of flooring. Resilient flooring can withstand heavy traffic very easily, and clean up just as easily too. If there is a downside, it might be that resilient floor tiles are susceptible to germs because of the seams in between the tiles. Sheet flooring is more popular in hospitals because there aren’t any seems to absorb the germs.
One of the best commercial materials almost every building has is cement flooring as a foundation underneath and can be covered by carpeting, ceramic tile, hardwood or laminates to make the surroundings look less industrial with the added benefit of lasting much longer than residential floors. There are also different grades of flooring specifically made for high foot traffic office buildings. Cement is the most suitable subfloor for carpet or any type of resilient type flooring. Plywood is also a suitable subfloor for resilient, cement backer board (wonder board-Durarock) are also cement boards that can be installed over plywood when putting down ceramic tile to make the floor strong and waterproof.
Hardwood floors are also a possible solution. Most people don’t consider wood to be among one of the better commercial flooring options because wood is often very expensive to install. While it looks great and keeps its look forever the cost makes such an endeavor prohibitive to most establishments examining flooring options. Laminate wood flooring looks just as good as regular hardwood, but it’s much cheaper. For businesses looking to install hardwood flooring, laminate wood may be a more cost-effective solution.

Which Way To Run My New Hardwood Flooring Boards ?

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Hardwood flooring is usually installed across your joists, not running in the same direction as them. Sometimes if there is an extra layer of sub-flooring they can be run in the same direction. If your installer is installing in the same direction as the joists, question why. In the years following the installation, as your house settles the flooring will dip in between the joists, causing a “wave” looking affect.

Buying Carpet At A Home Center ??

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Welcome To Cincinnati Carpet Blog… I know most of you who shop the big box stores have heard of the so called $ 37 to $ 99  installs all of your carpet. This even includes take up of the old, moving the furniture and even hauling away of the old carpet and pad. ALL FOR $ 99.
Sound to good to be true ?
Well, guess what ! I’ve been monitoring those guys since they have started this crazy marketing craze and it’s simply not true. Oh yes you’ll get all of the above but guess what ? In the cost of the carpet and pad (and both are seperate ) they have added anywhere from $.050 to $ .085 a square foot to cover the costs. That’s around $ 6.74 a square yard. That’s about what the price should be. Plus you are paying to get the job measured and in most cases you’re paying in full before the material is even ordered.
Now in addition you pay the $ 99
NOT SUCH A GOOD DEAL ! You can find a link to my site at http://www.CincinnatiFloorings.com

Hope you have enjoyed this and have learned that nothing is free

So I Do I Take Care of My New Carpet ?

The big three manufactures…Shaw, Mohawk and Beaulieu want you to have your new carpet steamed (hot water extraction) cleaned every 18-24 months. In addition they want the carpet cleaned by a member of the Carpet & Rug Cleaning Institute. And make sure you keep your receipts. If you follow these steps and have a warranty claim you will be ahead of the game.
I always tell my customers this fact up front to avoid a conflict down the road. So many of the people out there selling carpet don’t have a clue. This is a real fact with the home centers.
So…..vaccumm you new or old carpet 4-5 times a week. Make sure you hit the steps. And if you have a frieze make sure you don’t use the beater bar.
